Instructions for using the Zimmerman Family Tree program

The current version of GenoPro software is free. It is easy to use and has lots of great features. It is adware supported and can be distributed freely. For distribution to non-family members, please download the adware supported version from www.genopro.com. The version here does not contain the adware and is for family members. Once installed, the GenoPro software modifies the Microsoft Internet Explorer to allow you to view the family ".gno" files live from the web. Just "Open" instead of "Save" when clicking on the family ".gno" file.

(For all family members)

  • Download and install the GenoPro program to your computer.

    (For helper members):

  • Download and save your family's ".gno" file... Carthel , Charlie , Genebe , George , Kathryn , Leland , Lou , Mae , Velma , Verdith to a directory where GenoPro looks for genealogy files (usually under "My Documents/GenoPro Reports").
  • Start the GenoPro program and start updating your family tree... See instructions.

Instructions for using GenoPro to expand your family tree branch:

The GenoPro program uses a graph paper approach to creating a family tree.

From the menu icons, you can add family members.

By single clicking on a person and selecting the right mouse button, you get a menu that allows you establish links or open the "Family Wizard" where you create a set of parents and add children.

By double clicking on a person, you get a display to enter information about the person. Notice the "Birth Place: " info in the display. Birth place info needs to be added so we can trace where our family comes from and if we ever need to find hospital records.

Notice the format on dates. Dates are entered as dd/mm/yyyy.

If a person is deceased, please indicated the "Resting Place" and "Cause" of death. This will help us track cemetery grave sites and burial plots. The cause of death helps tell the demise of our family.

To create a family, double click a person, select "Family Wizard" and add their mate and children.

To create a marriage link, double click the line between the couple. Once again, the marriage date format is dd/mm/yyyy. Also in the "Label" enter "m m-yyyy" meaning married month-year. This labels the line.

To show relationship change such as a divorce between two people, double click on the marriage link, and indicate the relationship change. Notice the marriage link line changes to match the relationship change.

This is also where you can add scanned pictures of the wedding. Notice the little Red square indicating a picture.

Twins can be identified by placing the twin info in the comments field.

To quickly find a person, click on the binoculars. This will bring up the "Find What" display. Enter the name or text you are looking for and click OK.

This will bring up the "Search Results" display. Select the person you want, and the genealogy tree will locate the person and make the selection for you.

If your family tree and links get jumbled up, click on the "Auto Arrange" from the "Tools" menu item to straighten things out.

To link a child to a parent, right click on the child and choose the "Link As a Child".

Then drag the link line to the parent marriage line.

To export the family tree to another genealogy program, select "Export GEDCOM" from the "Tools" menu.

To save your family tree, click on the "File" menu and select the "Save As" item.

When you are ready to upload the updated GenoPro (.gno) file, please go to the "File Uploads" by clicking on the "File Uploads" link on the Zimmerman web site.
